It sounds melodramatic, but it was a black and white moment for me in realizing the eternal damnation "I" had sentenced "him" to by withholding mercy and grace. He was weak and vulnerable (as I was when he abused me) and needed to be held. I was the only one there to hold him. While holding him, I told him that it was okay to rest, that God was with him, that God loved him, and that I loved him. As I felt the relief and calm wash over his body in that last breath, I, too, experienced it. It was amazing. But the question remains... can I forgive another person, in that same way, who is still very much alive, who also doesn't acknowledge his offense. I'm working on it, sometimes daily. When I called...I was wronged, he knew he did wrong. When I called to meet him he wanted to meet in a public place for his protection. It was hard to say the words "I forgive you", it was messy.
